Little Beaver Fan

Oliver was able to experience his first live football game at Reser Stadium this last weekend complete with a pregame tailgate party. He was lucky enough to not only see the Beavers win but was able to see the Beavers win on a sunny day! There was so much excitement that he needed to take a little snooze during half time. It was a proud day for dad!

Public service announcement

Let me offer up a little bit of advice when it comes to trying to get some video of your child learning how to walk. Do not take video while he is walking towards you as this does not allow your hands to be free to catch him/protect yourself in the event he takes a tumble! I have loaded some video that shows why you shouldn't do this.

Home away from home...

Just last week I was put on a project for work that will require that I travel to CA every other week for the next few months. Needless to say, I will be making some new friends at the Marriott in Paso Robles in the coming weeks. For those whose knowledge of CA geography is as limited as mine, Paso Robles is just north of San Luis Obispo which is north of Santa Barbara which is north of LA (pretty much between San Fran and LA). Hopefully the project will move to LA shortly so I don't need two flights and a 30 minute drive to get to work:-) Last week both of my flights through SF were delayed which resulted in one missed connection (an extra 4 hour lay-over). Good times....

The Christy men survive!

Karla took a week to be a camp counselor this last week which left me and Oliver to look after ourselves. I am happy to say that we both survived the week with all of our fingers and toes in tact, in large part to our wonderful friends, the Hall's, especially Carrie who so graciously watched Oliver during the days while I was at work (and fed both of us dinner when I came to pick him up:-) I must say that I now have a new appreciation for single parents and am soooo thankful that I do not have to be one full time! Needless to say, Oliver and I both were very happy to see mom come home on Friday...

The Impassive Bystander - Someone Is Hurt, in Need of Compassion. Is It Human Instinct to Do Nothing?

Above is the title of an article that was run by the Washington Post that talks about two instances where people in need were completely ignored by those around them. The first was about a woman who collapsed in a hospital waiting room. She laid on the floor while hospital staff came in and out of the room but no one did anything for over an hour. She later died. The other story was about a man who was struck by a car while crossing the street. He laid there for over a minute while cars and pedestrians passed him by. Finally the police showed up. Both of these incidences were caught on tape where you could see people looking at the victims and purposefully choosing to do nothing.

It made me think of how many times each day we come across people who are in need, maybe not as critical as the two stories, but in need one way or another. To answer the title of the article, I don't agree that it is human instinct to do nothing. We all have a choice to either be an impassive bystander or a person of action...decide now which you are so when the time comes, there is no question.

Why the difference?

On Sunday evening, our congregation had the opportunity to cross over the Williamette River to the east side of Portland and join the congregation at Highland Christian Center for a worship service. How our churches became acquainted is a longer story that I won't get into now, but Highland is a predominantly african-american congregation. It's not hard to venture that the style of worship differs rather drastically between our two congregations. Despite that, our choirs and congregations joined together in what was one of the most authentic and meaningful times of worship I have experienced. How would I describe it...open, free-flowing, tangible, raw, communal...awesome. I felt like I wasn't just thinking about how grateful I am for God's saving grace but was actually communicating that fact to Him and those around me. The question I have been coming back to is why do I allow my surroundings to dictate how I worship when the reason why I am worshiping does not change from place to place?
